How Many Organisations Use the Cloud?

Whether you’re a financial organisation or a creative start-up, cloud computing is becoming more and more talked about in almost every sector. But sometimes with new technology, it’s worth checking just how many people are using it – to see whether it’s a passing trend or a permanent shift.

In this post, we’ll discuss how many organisations use the cloud and how it can help you.

How Many Organisations Use the Cloud?

92% of organisations use the cloud

Wondering whether the cloud is a fringe innovation or a largely adopted technology? It’s certainly the latter. According to IDG’s 2020 Cloud Computing Survey, the cloud makes up some part of the IT environment for 92% of organisations.

In terms of large enterprises with more than 1,000 employees, a whopping 81% have at least one application running in the cloud – or a segment of their computing infrastructure. That’s up from 51% in 2011. On top of that, 55% of organisations use multiple cloud environments, with 21% reporting the use of three or more.

Looking specifically at smaller businesses, Microsoft predicted that 78% would be using cloud-based applications by 2020.

Allocating budget to the cloud

Based on the findings above, it’s clear that the cloud is the way forward if you want to keep up with the competition. But just how much are they spending?

The same report found that large enterprises are spending 32% of their total IT budget on cloud computing. That’s a small rise from the 30% figure for 2018. What’s more convincing is the rise of 59% in average cloud investment by those enterprises from 2018 to 2020.

Overall, the global cloud computing market had a value of around £200 billion ($270 billion), which is expected to rise to almost £300 billion ($397 billion) by 2022.

Naturally, smaller businesses aren’t expected to match the lofty figures of large enterprises. Microsoft’s Trend Report found that the average IT budget for companies with fewer than 250 employees was just over £75,000 ($100,000).

While they didn’t present a typical cloud spend, they have reported that nearly 80% of SMEs said they’re saving money from the cloud, with an average saving of 20% by moving hosting services and productivity apps to the cloud.

Making the switch

Nowadays, the cloud is everywhere. That’s great for organisations who are looking for more ways to use it. But it can be overwhelming for those who haven’t made the switch at all.

At iBase, we believe asset management is one of the best ways to get started with the cloud. Rather than requiring costly on-premises servers, you can benefit from potentially infinite cloud storage space – and only ever pay for what you need.

With our cloud-hosted digital asset management software, you’ll gain instant access to a variety of tools for organising, retrieving, editing and sharing your assets. Most importantly, everything is safe and secure with a UK-based AWS datacentre.
