Aberdeen's online local studies collection

The Local Studies collection contains many thousands of photographs of Aberdeen. They are committed to making all of these images available to users worldwide.

Uploaded photographs can be searched by location, category or keyword. Once a search is complete, simply click on the thumbnail image to see the full record.

  • Order high resolution images online which can then be supplied on CD or printed onto gloss paper in a variety of sizes.
  • Historic data and images use a custom display depending on which type of information is on screen at the time meaning that much more data can be displayed on screen at any one time to make life easier for curators and researchers.
  • Any member of the public can easily submit comments on any digital file without first needing to register an account. Any errors or additions can be reviewed by a System Manager and placed on the site as soon as possible.

Aberdeen City Library and Information Services use the iBase digital assessment management system to widen access to our historic collections via The Silver City Vault. It has been particularly useful for our popular historic photographs as it enables the online display of high quality files and features such as image ordering, user comments and magnifier. The customer support from iBase has been excellent. Their response has been consistently fast and effective.
David Oswald, Local Studies Librarian, Aberdeen City Council.
