Glossary - S

SaaS (Software as a Service) - the software system is hosted on remote server, perhaps in 'The Cloud', and users do not need any software on their local machine, other than a standard browser. In the context of digital asset management SaaS might be described in any of the following ways.

SQL (Structured Query Language) - a language used to process data in a relational database, such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle.

Streaming media server software, streaming video server software, streaming video and audio - a method of delivery of video and audio files over a network or the internet that doesn't require the whole file to be downloaded before it can be 'played'.
