JPEG - Joint Photographic Experts Group. A standard commonly used for reducing the size (number of bytes) of an image file by using what is known as a compression algorithm.
JPEG 2000 - see also JPEG. A file compression standard from the Joint Photographic Experts Group which enables compression with less visual loss than a standard JPEG. A useful feature of JPEG 2000 is the ability to display a low resolution version of an image without having to decompress the whole file, which might otherwise take some time for large images.
